How to find all pages containing a specific text string with Screaming Frog?

December 21, 2017 in SEO

Screaming Frog is one of my favourite tools because it’s versatile and I can use it for analysis and automation of boring activities (I use it for SEO, PPC and Affiliate Marketing).

Today I want to show you a feature called Custom Search. It helps every time you have to find pages of your website that contain/don’t contain specific text strings. For example, let’s say that you are the webmaster of the BBC website and you want to find all the pages that talk about “brexit”.

First of all, you have to open Screaming Frog and go to Custom -> Search.

Here you can set 10 different filters.

  • Contains: If you want to find all the pages that contain “Brexit” in the source code.
  • Does Not Contains: If you want to find all the pages where the spider can’t find the word “Brexit”.

Then you can click the button Start. Now you have to open the tab Custom; here you will find all the URLs that match the rules you defined previously.

In the column Occurrences, you can see how many times the spider found the text string in each page.

You can also use this feature to check if the Google Analytics pixel is on every page. To do that you have to search for pages that do not contain your UA-XXXXX id.
